This strain originated as 2 similar varieties: Lorz Italian \u0026amp; Applegate Red. This is our favorite garlic on the farm here on account of its large cloves that peel easily. Bulbs are satin white over pink clove wrappers.  Most bulbs will have only 4-6 cloves, saving time in the kitchen.  Flavor is rich and bold with just the right amount of spiciness. Stores fairly well for a hardneck, lasting until March or April in simple cool storage. Another bonus of this variety is that it produces scapes (see photo), which are false flower stalks that can be used as a sort of green garlic (think bunching onions) in April and May.  It is best to break these scapes off as it helps make for larger bulbs instead of the plant putting its energy into making these false flowers that produce small bubils.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough this variety is a bit more difficult to grow than softneck varieties in so far as it is more sensitive to weed pressure and water inconsistency, it is such a joy to use in the kitchen that it's worth the extra effort.  It is capable of growing to 3.5\" in diameter with 5-8 large cloves per bulb. Often dappled with dark purple, bulbs can get quite large and contain 5-7 squat tan to brown cloves with thick skins that are relatively easy to peel. A small percentage of Marbled will produce weak stems that become pliable enough to enable braiding. Marbleds store fairly well and tend to be quite pungent. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eJupiter:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e This garlic is named for the largest planet in our solar system, indeed more than twice the size as all other planets combined. While bulb isn’t \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethat\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e large, it does size up considerably.  If the the plants are impressive for their size, the voluminous root mass at harvest is equally so.  Jupiter, the garlic, is dense and sulfurous; \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jupiter\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eJupiter\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e the planet, a gas giant, composed largely of hydrogen and helium is oblate, like a bulb of garlic.
