Growing Tips for Brassicas

Brassicas:

Plant seed ¼ - ½” deep indoors or in a greenhouse.  Germinates best between 50-75 degrees. Transplant 18” apart when they have 2-3 true leaves.  Tolerates light frost. Provide ample fertility and water regularly to ensure quick growth.  Thrives in spring and fall gardens.  Control Aphids with soap spray and by providing beneficial insect habitat. 

 

Biodynamic Sowing Air – Broccoli & Cauliflower

Leaf / Water ≈ Cabbage, Collards, Kale

 

Broccoli: Ideal head formation takes place between 60-70 degrees F. Keep side shoots picked for best production.

Cabbage: Provide ample fertility for good head formation

Cauliflower: Needs room & fertility to form a nice head.  Performs best when grown for fall harvest.

Chinese Cabbage: control flea beetles with row covers, bolts in hot weather, so harvest as soon as it’s ready. 

Collards: Grow Like Kale, tolerates heat well.

Brussels Sprouts: Require a long season.  Generally grown for a fall harvest but planted in spring.  Sweetness with frost.

Kale: Plant as a spring or fall crop. Eat lots of it!
