PERILLA, Shiso - Wild Sesame, Black Egoma

P. frutescens var. frutescens (80-90 days)

Known as Wild sesame, this plant grows to about 3 feet tall with pretty opposite leaves. Like Japanese Basil – it is very aromatic. The leaves and seeds are used in cuisine around the world. In Korea, the leaves are eaten fresh, blanched, pickled or fermented in Kimchi. Yum!

The oilseed contains about 38-45% lipid. The expressed oil from these seeds, exhibits one of the highest proportions of omega-3 (α-linolenic acid (ALA)[6] fatty acids of any seed oil, at 54-64% and only 14% linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. This unusual n6:n3 ratio gives this crop potential for an alternative to other seed oils.  A highly novel, conversation starter that is dazzling to look at and smell!  From our friend Hiroko Kurosaki from Japan.  The seed is delicious and quite easy to grow and thresh on a small scale.
