Maltese Cross - Lychnis chalcedonica
A showy perennial that grows to 2-4’ tall that produces bright scarlet red clusters of flowers with a distinctive cross shape. Originating from Eastern Europe and Western Asia, it arrived through trade to Western Europe in the Middle Ages when it was commonly called Jerusalem’s cross. In the Caryophyllaceae family along with pinks and carnations, it tends to be a short lived perennial, however, it can also self sow and become a nice border planting that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
