Certified Organic Cover Crop Seed Cool Season Soil Building Mix Growing a cover crop (aka Green Manure) is a wonderful way to build soil organic matter, protect the soil against erosion, fix nitrogen, provide habitat for beneficial insects & pollinators and so much more! We typically plant cool season cover crops after harvesting the last of the summer garden which is typically in October here in Oregon.  Alternately, they can be planted as early in late winter or early spring as possible.   This mixture of cool season varieties is a proven mix that we use here on our farm and in gardens. The cereal grain Oats sprout quickly and provide a vertical scaffold for the peas and vetch to climb. Organic Dunedale Peas Pisum sativum Dunedale peas are an annual legume used in cover crops to produce organic matter & nitrogen, or as forage.  They do best when mixed with cereal grains and/or legumes; they use the other plants for support to climb on with their upward growth.  As a cover crop they break down quickly after incorporation and can produce high amounts of nitrogen, this nitrogen can be available to the subsequent cash crop.  Also Make Great pea shoots / microgreens for winter salads!! Seed Cleaning Screens - Set of 4 We are excited to offer this simple yet sturdy set of 4 hand cleaning screens to support your seed saving efforts.  We make these right here at the farm with recycled Douglas Fir and Pine lumber and hardware cloth.  While many specialized seed screens exist, we have found that with these simple 4 screens you can do 98% of the job of getting seeds cleaned from chaff and dust.  Each screen is 12"x12" by 1 & 1/2" deep.  The four sizes are 1/2" mesh, 1/4" mesh, 1/8" mesh and 5/64" perforated metal. Rustic wood frames are glued and screwed and then rounded and sanded for easy handling. Oiled with Linseed oil for longevity. Triticale, Bunker (X Titicosecale) A cross between wheat and cereal rye.  Bunker is winter active, awnletted (reduced awn expression) variety used primarily as a green chop -whole-plant forage, for hay, or for a very high yielding cover crop.  Bunkers awnletted characteristic makes more palatable hay than a fully awned (bearded) variety.  When used and a cover crop, Bunker provides benefits similar to winter active varieties of cereal rye (i.e. AGS104 Rye and Merced Rye); high biomass production, weed suppression, greatly improved water penetration, and excellent cycling of residual nutrients.  Bunker would be considered a standard height cultivar.  It can be planted in Fall and Winter in most areas of California.  Bunker should be planted in the Spring in colder areas, it will have the same growing season as Spring Wheat.  * We regret that we are unable to ship this product internationally in amounts larger than 1 pound * Plant at 120-150 pounds per acre. Vetch, Lana (Vicia villosa) Certified Organic Lana woollypod Vetch is vigorous variety used for forage and hay or in cover crops to build organic matter and add high amounts of nitrogen.  Lana vetch is a winter active and early maturing vetch.  When planted in the fall it will produce most of its biomass in the winter and the early spring.  In cold climates Lana vetch should be planted in the spring.
