Carthamus tinctorius (100 days) 

An ancient crop grown for its use as a fiber dye and its nutritious seeds and oil.  Cloth dyed with safflower was found in the tomb of pharaoh Tutankhamen in ancient Egypt.  It is easy to grow.  Direct sow.  Grows to 3 feet high and produces 1-5 flowers per plant with 15-20 seeds per head. Matures seed in short season areas. Tolerates drought well.  Poultry relish the seed heads that produce abundant sunflower like seeds.  Frost sensitive.  SSF.
