Growing Tips for Fruiting Vegetable
Beans: Direct seed when soil has warmed to 70 degrees and there’s no danger of frost. Thin to 4-6”.
Corn: Direct seed at 3-4” spacing when soil has warmed to 70 degrees. Thin to 12”. Can be pre-sprouted indoors to get an early planting in. Protect from birds.
Eggplant, Peppers & Tomatoes: Seed indoors into warm soil. Transplant outside after all danger of frost has passed. Space 12-18” for peppers and eggplant. Space 2-3’ for tomatoes, and trellis indeterminates.
Peas: Direct sow as early in spring as possible in rows 12-18” apart, 1-3” in row. Watch out for birds and slugs. Trellis pole types. Pick frequently.
Cucumbers, Melons & Squash: Direct sow into warm soil after danger of frost has passed. Spacing varies from 24” for zucchini, cucumbers and melons to 4-6’ for pumpkins. Protect seedlings from cucumber beetles with row covers.
