Growing tips for Greens
Greens:
Plant early indoors for the earliest plantings or direct seed once the soil has warmed up in spring. Sow most greens ¼- 1/2” deep, or twice as deep as the seed is long in a fertile moist, well-drained soil. Transplant out and thin to correct spacing when they have 2-3 true leaves. Protect seedlings from slugs and other pests through careful observation and the use of row covers.
Biodynamic Sowing ≈ Leaf / Water
Arugula: Best direct sown to avoid early bolting, harvest frequently for most tender leaves. Use of floating row covers to control flea beetles
Chickory: Start indoors and transplant 12” apart. Works great as a fall planted cold tolerant lettuce substitute.
Lettuce: Direct Seed for mix, or start indoors and plant out 4-6 weeks later for heads. Space 12”. Keep well watered for sweetest flavor. Bolts in the heat.
Mesclun Mix: Direct seed in rows 10-12” apart, and harvest with scissors to 1” above the soil,
Mustards: Direct seed or transplant as with Arugula. Keep harvested to avoid bolting. Flea beetles are fond of them. Monitor and control as necessary.
