Tomato, Pienollo Giallo

Siskiyou Seeds

$ 4.95

Thanks to the Dryland Farming Institute we received these heirloom Italian storage tomatoes that produce clusters of bright yellow grape shaped fruits with a distinctive nipple at the blossom end. Being a storage tomato the skin is a bit thicker than a typical cherry or grape/plum tomato, but this is what helps them to store over the winter.

The flavor when ripe is a pleasant mild sweet that intensifies over time. Indeterminate vines will benefit from trellising and pruning. Pienollo means “hanging” in the Neopolitan dialect from the region in Italy where these have been historically grown for centuries. Trusses of fruits are tied up into veritable “ristras” to hang in your kitchen to have fresh tomatoes over the winter. In a time before refrigeration and long distance transport these storage tomatoes known as "pomodoro d'inverno" in Italy were a welcome addition to kitchens, cuisine and tasty winter meals.
