Poke Berry 

Phytolacca americana

A perennial plant growing up to 8’ in height. It has simple leaves on green to burgundy stems and a large white tap- root. The flowers are green to white, followed by purple to almost black berries. The seeds have long viability and can germinate after many years in the soil. Plant prefers to grow in full sun and is not particular about soil or water– freely volunteers in old gardens, fields, fencerows. Slow germination is typical. Sow seeds in fall or early spring. 60 days cold/moist conditioning may speed germination. Zones 4 to 9. Highly ornamental. HIF.
