Interested in growing garlic but can't settle on which variety? We'd love to introduce you into the wide world of garlic diversity with our garlic samplers. We offer a few different options: 1/2 pound or 1/4 pound each of 4 varieties of garlic for which we have limited quantities. Please note the garlic varieties included may change depending on availability.
Each type represents a different facet of the garlic genome:
Bangkok - Hardneck Turban variety. Originally acquired at a market in the Thai capital, as a small white bulb with pale cloves but after a few seasons of adaptation became a large Turban with typical fat pink cloves inside violet wrapped bulbs. Spicy! Only available through our Sampler.
Donostia, Creole Red - Donostia has a wonderful full bodied flavor and an exceptionally long storage capacity of 10-12 months! This is a very handsome, long storing Creole type was originally sourced from a market in Donostia, Euzkadi, aka San Sebastián, Spain.
Kishlyk - This is a Wild garlic type - similar to a Purple Stripe from Uzbekistan in the center of origin for garlic. Very handsome purple striped bulbs have 8-12 tall, elongated crescent shaped cloves with a building fiery spicy flavor. The cloves have a bright purple clove wrapper. An exquisitely gorgeous garlic that grows sturdy and vigorous plants. Remarkably spicy, a little goes a long ways!!!
Jupiter - A hardneck marbled garlic available only through our Samplers. Plants are tall, have wide curvaceous leaves and stout scapes that are ideal for grilling. Often dappled with dark purple, bulbs can get quite large and contain 5-7 squat tan to brown cloves with thick skins that are relatively easy to peel. A small percentage of Marbled will produce weak stems that become pliable enough to enable braiding. Marbleds store fairly well and tend to be quite pungent. Jupiter: This garlic is named for the largest planet in our solar system, indeed more than twice the size as all other planets combined. While bulb isn’t that large, it does size up considerably. If the the plants are impressive for their size, the voluminous root mass at harvest is equally so. Jupiter, the garlic, is dense and sulfurous; Jupiter the planet, a gas giant, composed largely of hydrogen and helium is oblate, like a bulb of garlic. While the vast planet shines bright, the plants cast shadows upon those in their orbit. It is hoped that Jovian seeds will make for many moons to orbit their elder god as the Romans would refer to it.
