Growing Tips for Culinary Herbs

Culinary Herbs:

Plant twice as deep as the seed is long in a fertile well drained soil mix and keep moist until germination. 

 

Basil: Start indoors, needs warm soil (minimum 70°) to germinate.  Transplant out after risk of frost has passed.  Cut regularly to prolong harvest.

Chives: start indoors and transplant out in 4-6 weeks 8-12” apart.  Keep well weeded to establish

Cilantro: Direct sow in garden.  Plant every 4-6 weeks for a continuous supply. Flowers are great pollinator nectar source.

Dill: start indoors. Tolerates light frost. 

Fennel: Best to grow transplants then set out in spring.  Leaves, bulbs and seed all useful.

Parsley: Start indoors. Slow to germinate. Transplant out 12” apart. Tolerates light frost.

Tobacco: Start indoors or outside.  Frost sensitive.

Medicinals: start indoors and plant out once they have 3-4 true leaves.
